How to Measure Roof Pitch

Roof pitch is the angle of your roof or its slope. You’ll hear your local roofer refer to roof pitch as an angle, such as 6/12. This simply means that your roof will rise six inches forever 12 inches covered. In this instance, this is a medium-sloped roof angle.

Steps to measure roof pitch

  • You’ll need a leveler and a tape measure. Ideally, you’ll want to measure your roof’s pitch from the inside of your home, such as the attic. This is both for safety reasons and because you get a more accurate measurement if you do so.
  • If you’re measuring from the outside, you’ll have to measure from the top of the roof or at the edge of the roof, using a ladder.
  • Measuring from the edge of the roof, place your leveler against the edge and extend it into the air until it’s level. Then measure down from the exposed end back to the surface of the roof. You’ll have to divide that number by how many 12-inch segments your leveler has. By this we mean if say your leveler was a total of 24 inches long and you measured 12 inches for the pitch, then your pitch is 6/12.
  • Eyeball your roof’s pitch. While not scientific, this method will at least give you some idea of your roof’s pitch.
  • From inside your attic, place the end of the level against the bottom of a roof rafter until it is level. Measure vertically from the 12-inch mark on the level straight up to the underside of the roof rafter. This measurement is the number of inches the roof rises in relation to 12 inches.
