How to Prevent Moss Growth on Your Roof

Moss is a green, flowerless plant that commonly thrives in damp and shaded environments — making your roof’s nooks and crannies a prime location for it to grow. It absorbs the moisture from its surroundings and begins to spore. Not only can this cause severe  damage  to your roof if left untreated, but it can also pose a threat to your family’s health.

Why Moss is a Problem

Moss roots can lift up shingles, create leaks in your roof, and breed bacteria that can cause health concerns for your family. While not all moss poses a health risk, some can be harmful, especially for older people, children, and those who suffer from asthma and respiratory problems. Spores from your roof can easily get tracked down to your driveway, where they can then make their way inside your home.

You can prevent moss growth on your roof by taking a few simple measures:

  • Cut back overgrown trees to help ensure your roof isn’t completely shaded, this allows sunlight to dry up any moisture.
  • Keep your roof free of debris through regular roof  maintenance  and cleanings.
  • Use zinc strips to help prevent the future growth of moss. These strips can be nailed along the ridge caps at the peak of your roof. When it rains, the zinc will be released onto your roof and inhibit any moss growth.

When It’s Time to Replace Your Roof

Similar to algae, if you have moss on your roof, you should contact a professional to remove it. Not only is walking on your roof dangerous, but it can be harmful to your health should you come in direct contact with the moss.

However, if your roof is too damaged, you will need to contact a roofing professional to replace shingles and  make repairs.  The following are the most common signs your roof will need to be repaired:

  • Your roof frequently  leaks.
  • Your shingles are cracked, splintered, or missing.
  • Your roof is more than 15 years old.
  • Your roof distracts from the curb appeal of your home.
