Take a Look at Your Shingles
Shingles for the outermost layer of your roof and are often the first part to show signs of damage. Luckily, they are also the most visible part of your roof, and you can easily evaluate them safely from the ground .
Take a good, long look at your roof and see if you can see any of the following:
- Missing shingles
- Discoloration
- Pooled water
- Curled shingles
- Visible cracks

Check Vents and Flashing
Using a secure ladder, carefully inspect the base of your chimney. You’ll notice that the area where it meets the rest of your roof is coated in a thin, usually metallic material. This is called flashing, and if there are any cracks or rust present on it, you may need to call our professional roofers.
Inspect Your Attic
If you have an attic, investigating it is a great way to safely check for signs of roof damage. Inspect the rafters and joists to make sure they still look sturdy, and check for the presence of water or mold, which are big indicators of roofing leaks . While you’re up there, look around for nests, droppings, and other signs of a pest infestation . If animals have made themselves at home in your attic, there’s a good chance they chewed through your roof to get in!
Always Put Safety First
Safety should always be your priority when inspecting your roof. Avoid walking on your roof when possible, and make sure any ladders you use to get a better vantage point are secured firmly to the ground.
